Gardeners Homerton is committed to providing professional gardening and grounds maintenance services in a safe and responsible manner. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to protecting our workers, clients, visitors and members of the public wherever we operate. We comply with applicable health and safety laws and continually work to improve our standards and practices.

Policy Aims and Scope

This policy applies to all Gardeners Homerton employees, contractors and anyone working under our control, at all locations where we provide gardening and related services. Our aims are to prevent accidents and work-related ill health, manage risks effectively, and promote a positive safety culture throughout the business.

Health and safety is a core part of how we plan and deliver services such as garden maintenance, planting, lawn care, hedge cutting, soft landscaping and light outdoor improvements across our regular service area.

Management Responsibilities

Senior management at Gardeners Homerton has overall responsibility for health and safety. Management will:

Ensure that safe systems of work are developed, implemented and reviewed regularly. Provide appropriate training, information and supervision to enable staff to work safely and competently. Supply and maintain suitable tools, machinery and equipment, including safety devices and guards. Allocate sufficient resources to manage health and safety effectively. Investigate incidents, accidents and near misses to learn lessons and prevent recurrence.

Managers and supervisors must lead by example, encouraging safe behaviour and addressing unsafe acts or conditions promptly.

Employee Responsibilities

Every employee and contractor working for Gardeners Homerton has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their work. All staff must:

Follow company safety procedures and site specific instructions. Use machinery, tools and equipment only as trained and authorised. Wear and properly maintain the personal protective equipment provided. Report defects, hazards, accidents and near misses immediately to a supervisor. Cooperate with any risk assessment, training or investigation activities.

No employee is expected to work in unsafe conditions, and any concerns about health and safety must be raised without delay.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

Gardeners Homerton identifies hazards and assesses risks associated with our gardening work, including but not limited to manual handling, working with powered tools, working at height, exposure to noise and vibration, use of chemicals, uneven ground, and adverse weather conditions.

For all routine activities, we implement safe systems of work and provide guidance to staff. For non routine or higher risk tasks, a specific risk assessment is carried out before work starts. Control measures are then communicated clearly and implemented on site.

Tools, Machinery and Equipment

We ensure that all gardening tools, machinery and equipment are suitable for their intended use and are maintained in a safe working condition. Regular inspections and servicing are carried out in line with manufacturers recommendations and relevant regulations.

Only trained and authorised staff may operate powered equipment such as mowers, trimmers, hedge cutters, blowers and other mechanical tools. Defective or damaged equipment must be withdrawn from use immediately and reported to a supervisor.

Personal Protective Equipment

Gardeners Homerton provides personal protective equipment appropriate to the tasks being carried out. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high visibility clothing, helmets, and respiratory protection when necessary.

Employees are required to wear PPE as instructed, keep it in good condition, and report any loss or damage. PPE is considered a last line of defence and is used in conjunction with other control measures identified in risk assessments.

Safe Handling of Substances

Where gardening work involves the use of fertilisers, fuels, cleaning agents or other substances, we assess and control the associated risks. Substances are stored securely, used only as directed and applied by trained personnel. Safety data is consulted to determine appropriate handling, PPE and emergency measures.

We seek to minimise the use of hazardous substances and select safer alternatives wherever reasonably practicable, while still delivering effective garden care for our clients.

Manual Handling and Ergonomics

Many gardening activities involve lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or repetitive movements. Gardeners Homerton aims to reduce manual handling risks by using mechanical aids, planning work to avoid unnecessary handling and organising loads to be manageable.

Staff receive guidance on good posture, safe lifting techniques and taking appropriate breaks during physically demanding tasks. Heavy or awkward loads should only be moved with assistance or not at all if it cannot be done safely.

Working at Height and Site Conditions

Some tasks, such as hedge cutting or pruning, may involve working at height. Gardeners Homerton will use suitable access equipment and follow safe procedures to prevent falls. Standing on unsafe surfaces or makeshift platforms is strictly prohibited.

Before work commences, we assess site conditions including access routes, ground stability, slopes, proximity to roads, utilities and other hazards. We take steps to protect the public, pets and property, which may include barriers, signage or temporary exclusion zones when tools are in use.

Training, Competence and Communication

We provide appropriate induction training and ongoing instruction to ensure our staff are competent to carry out their roles safely. This includes training on equipment operation, hazard recognition, emergency procedures and safe working practices related to gardening and landscape maintenance.

Health and safety information is communicated clearly to all employees. When working on client premises, any relevant site rules or specific risks are also briefed before work starts.

Incident Reporting and Emergency Arrangements

All accidents, injuries, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported to a supervisor as soon as possible. Gardeners Homerton records and investigates these events to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.

We maintain basic first aid provisions appropriate to the nature of our work and ensure staff know how to access assistance in the event of an emergency. Emergency procedures, including what to do in the case of fire, serious injury or exposure to hazardous substances, are covered in staff training.
